PEOPLE OF FAITH *
Religious belief has been steadily declining across the Western world, as advancements in science, technology, and modern lifestyles reshape people’s perspectives on faith. Greece, historically one of the most religious countries in Europe, has not been immune to this trend.
According to recent data, the percentage of Greeks who identify as believers has dropped from 92% in 2005 to 73% today—a significant decline of 19 percentage points in less than two decades. Even among those who still believe, church attendance has also dwindled. Only 28% of Greeks report attending church services at least once a month, highlighting a shift away from traditional religious practices.
Despite this decline, Greece remains one of the most religious nations in the Western world. The country ranks first among developed economies in linking belief in God to morality and continues to place high importance on faith in daily life. Additionally, Greece holds the second spot among developed Western nations in terms of the significance of God and prayer in people’s lives.
While faith may be diminishing in numbers, its cultural and moral influence remains deeply embedded in Greek society.
