In the village of Pyrgos, Kissamos, in Chania, Crete, young people have established their own unique tradition. Since 1958, every year on Holy Saturday, just before the priest proclaims "Christ is Risen," they gather on the rooftops and streets near the Holy Church of St. George to perform a spectacular ritual.

Holding large chunks of steel wool, they set them alight, twirl them with all their strength, and strike them against the ground, creating a mesmerizing display of thousands of sparks illuminating the night sky.

In 2024, the tradition became even more breathtaking, as it unfolded amidst a heavy downpour, allowing fire and water to coexist in the resurrection sky, making for an unforgettable spectacle.
