Holy Satursday at Pyrgos

On the village of Pyrgos, Kissamos at Chania, Crete young people have created their own tradition.

Every year since 1958, On Holy Saturday, just before the priest says Christ is risen, they gather on the roofs of the houses and on the streets, there next to the Holy Church of St. George, and light large chunks of steel wool.

After lighting them, they twirl them with all their might and strike them on the ground, creating thousands of sparks that fill the sky.

In 2024 the custom was even more impressive as it took place in the midst of a heavy downpour so that fire and water coexisted in the resurrection sky.
