HAPPY CLOWN, SAD BOY

Carnival celebrations are grand events in many parts of Greece. In Chania, the streets fill with families, and children dressed in costumes. Clowns are a common sight, as are young Roma boys and girls selling balloons.

Many of these children work all day long, with no choice and often without earning any money for themselves.

In this photo, a clown makes a joyful gesture, but the boy holding the balloons looks sad—on a day meant for celebration.
