After the rain
This photograph was captured in that ephemeral, almost magical moment when a heavy downpour in Chania had just passed. The clouds had begun to part, letting the first soft rays of sunlight break through — and with them came a rainbow, arching gently across the sky above the Old Venetian Harbor.
The air was still wet, and occasional raindrops continued to fall, leaving streaks across the glass through which I took the shot. This created a natural filter — a delicate texture that lends the image an emotional depth, like a memory half-remembered.
On the right, a figure under a colorful umbrella is reflected in the wet surface, their shape both present and ghostlike — a layering of reality and reflection. In the distance, people walk toward the iconic lighthouse, now bathed in golden light, the puddles beneath their feet shimmering with the last remnants of the storm.
I chose to keep this image in full color because the color is the message. The rainbow, the pastel umbrella, the glow of the buildings across the water, and the wet glistening path — all these hues are part of the transformation from storm to calm. Color conveys hope, renewal, and the fragile beauty of the in-between.
This is a piece for those who love the poetry of transition — for those who stand still in the quiet after the storm and watch the world come back to light. A reminder that after the rain, color returns — softly, unexpectedly, but always beautifully.
