This composite photograph captures a fleeting moment of youthful joy at the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania. It was late afternoon — that perfect hour when the sun begins to dip but still holds its strength. The light exploded between the buildings, casting long shadows and bursting into radiant sun rays that illuminated the scene with an almost theatrical glow.
In the foreground, a young girl leaps and twirls in carefree delight, her silhouette etched against the glimmering harbor waters. Her hair is flying, her arms are stretched, lost in the moment — while just a few steps behind them, a lone figure sits quietly on a bench, gazing out at the water. The contrast is subtle but profound: stillness and movement, reflection and freedom.
I chose to present this image in black and white to strip away the distractions of color and focus entirely on the interplay of light, form, and emotion. The monochrome tones enhance the textures of the old stone, the shimmering water, and the architectural details of the Venetian buildings across the harbor. Most importantly, it allows the viewer to feel the scene rather than just see it — the energy of the dance, the peace of the onlooker, the brilliance of the light.
