Summer walk at Yali Tzami plaza
This photograph was taken on a glorious summer afternoon in Chania, at the plaza of Yali Tzami, one of the most iconic and beloved corners of Crete. The air was warm, the harbor alive with the quiet buzz of strolling visitors, and the golden light of the setting sun cast a soft, honeyed glow across the historic stonework of the old mosque.
What truly caught my eye in this moment wasn’t just the architecture or the light, but a young couple walking closely together, gently leaning into each other as they made their way through the casual bustle of the square. Around them, people moved with the relaxed energy of summer — some exploring, others chatting or taking photos — but the couple seemed in their own peaceful world.
Just beneath their feet, a shallow puddle from a brief summer shower created a perfect reflection — a mirror of domes, arches, and sky, blending reality and its echo into one harmonious frame. A few final raindrops still hung in the air, catching the sun as they fell, reminding me that this was a moment of transition — from rain to warmth, from ordinary to unforgettable.
I chose to present this image in full color, because it is color that makes the scene sing. The soft creams and terracottas of the mosque, the blue of the sky mirrored in the water, the warmth of skin tones and summer clothes, all combine to celebrate the joy and vibrancy of life at the harbor. Color here is not just aesthetic — it’s emotional.
This print is for those who treasure the everyday magic of summer — a gentle reminder that the most meaningful moments often happen when we’re simply walking, together, in the light.
